General Dentistry

Check ups and Clean

At Novo Dental we believe that prevention is better than cure and it is also a much more cost effective option in the long term. Research is suggesting that gum disease is linked to other common health problem, so we treat dental disease in the same way other medical conditions should be addressed – quickly. Your regular six monthly hygiene visit will consist of two parts. An initial examination and discussion with one of the dentists will identify any areas of concern and explain any queries you have. Dr Felipe and Dr Marcel, our dentists will then thoroughly clean your teeth to remove the calculus and plaque build up, discuss the on going care of your teeth and apply any treatments that the dentist has recommended, such as fluoride. Our aim is to provide you with dental care for life, and we believe that our check ups and cleaning is one of the most important services that we offer our patients.

Restorations / Fillings

A restoration or filling is used to re-build the tooth structure after part of it is removed to eliminate decay. Over time fillings can deteriorate, leak or break and they need to be replaced with new restorations. There are a number of different filling materials available and we will discuss the options with you and recommend the restoration that is most suitable for your specific situation. The fee for a filling varies depending on the size of the restoration and the type of material used. Generally, the cheaper materials have a limited lifespan and require replacement more often. The stronger options such as ceramic should last many years if they are properly cared for. For your information, we do not use amalgam filling material at Novo Dental.

Crowns

A crown (also known as a cap) is like a hat that goes over the entire tooth – across the top, down the sides and binds it all together, stopping future cracks and cusp breakages and providing very good retention. They are very solid, good looking and durable restorations. There are different types of crowns made from ceramic, ceramic and metal or all metal. At Novo Dental we generally recommend crowns for root treated teeth, to stabilise tooth structure that is heavily filled or broken, to replace very large fillings or for cosmetic options. Crowns are much stronger than composite resin filling material and they should last many years if they are properly looked after.

Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies and accidents are common. If treated correctly and timely, the tooth can often be saved.

Dental pain

Dental emergencies usually involve severe dental pain. It is not a broken tooth or a tooth ache that has been persisting for a couple weeks, but rather a quick onset of severe and unrelenting pain. If a dental emergency occurs during normal working hours, we will ensure that you can be seen within a couple of hours of you calling us. If your pain occurs on a weekend or overnight, the after hours emergency number that you can call is +678 77 26696. Where possible we recommend that you take some mild pain relief until our one of our doctors look after you. Dental emergencies are usually the result of a severe infection or abscess that has formed in or around the tooth. It may be a new infection, but often it is a result of decay or gum disease that your dentist had previously identified as needing treatment. Many people choose to delay treatment until it ‘hurts’, but this is not advisable. Dental decay or infection will ‘blow up’ at the most inconvenient time. It is painful and often advanced enough to require root canal treatment or extraction.

At Novo Dental we advise that prevention is better than cure. Regular preventive care appointments and early detection and treatment of any decay and infection gives a very good chance of saving your tooth, avoiding sudden pain and reducing the cost of complex treatment.

Dental accidents

Dental accidents are the most common cause of dental problems for children and teenagers behind decay and gum disease. Mouthguards MUST be worn during any highly active or contact sports. Your teeth are too valuable to risk and leaving them on the football field is both a painful and expensive exercise. Mouthguards should be made by your dentist rather than purchasing an ‘off the shelf’ or ‘do it yourself’ version.

What to do if your tooth is knocked out:

Place your tooth in cool milk or salt water.
DO NOT wash it off or clean it.
Get to your dentist immediately – in some cases the tooth can be saved.

Orthodontic

Braces and Invisible braces

Remember the days when teeth were removed before braces were put on for three years. Now there is an alternative. Treating children with functional appliances to assist in correct jaw development is a safe an effective option to traditional orthodontics. Root Canal and Crown

A tooth that needs this type of treatment means that we can save the tooth and keep it in your mouth. This is a great chance for you to retain a vital part of your mouth, your smile and your bite.

A Root Canal Filling (also called Endodontics) is a deep filling that blocks up the space where the nerve canal of the tooth was. The reason for doing this is because all the bacteria have managed to infect the nerve in the root.

The root canals are cleaned with thin metal tools which aim to get to the root ends. The space is widened and smoothed and washed out regularly with strong antiseptics to help eliminate all the bacteria. After, this space is filled with another antiseptic paste and covered with a temporary filling. We sometimes need to do this a few times.

A tooth that has had this treatment, needs to be protected from breaking down or fracturing. There are some options for this but crowns are usually the best method to cover the tooth.

Crowns provide the option of cover for a tooth and also keep it strong enough to bite with. It is sometimes too much to ask for a tooth-coloured composite filling to keep a tooth strong enough to bite on, and if a weak filling is placed into the tooth, the tooth may break down or even fracture.

Crowns provide the alternative by covering the whole of the top and sides of a tooth to give the tooth strength to last a long time. The materials can be porcelain or metal, like gold crowns. The porcelain types provide strength but also give you a tooth like result.

Implants

If one or more of your teeth are missing, there are a number of ways to replace them. An alternative to bridges, partials or complete dentures may be dental implants. Implants are used to replace missing roots and support artificial replacement teeth. They are comfortable and look like natural teeth.

A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium metal. It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. An artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant. The implant acts as an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place.

If you are in good general health, have healthy gums and have enough bone in the jaw to hold an implant, dental implants might be right for you. If your jawbone has shrunk or if it has not developed normally, you may be able to have a bone graft to build up the bone. A bone graft is a way of adding new bone to your jawbone. Your dentist or dental specialist will tell you if bone grafting can be done.
